A night to forget for Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud
France’s 2-0 loss to Spain will probably be remembered more for the use of the video referee, but Arsenal’s French stars, and Laurent Koscielny in particular, will not look back on this game too fondly.
He gave away a penalty for Spain’s first goal with a clumsy challenge. Gerard Deulofeu nutmegged him and then the Arsenal defender brought him down in the area in what was a costly mistake. The aforementioned video referee was consulted but it was a clear penalty.
Then a few minuted later he had to be bandaged up after a clash of heads.
Olivier Giroud started the game from the bench but came on as a second half substitute. He scored twice in France’s last game but failed to make any sort of impact in this game.
The video referee will get the headlines though. First a decision to overrule a goal that was given on the pitch for France that was actually offside. Then later to give Spain a goal that had incorrectly been ruled offside. There have been a few arguments against video refereeing, but for me, getting decsions right at this level is way more important than waiting the 30 seconds it may take to decide for fans to celebrate.
