Arsenal transfer news: Gunners in talks over signing Real Madrid superstar
Arsenal are in talks to sign Karim Benzema, according to Corriere dello Sport.
There were reports a few days ago by Don Balon that Arsenal were interested in the strike, but now Corriere dello Sport claim that the Gunners are already negotiating a move.
Arsenal have been linked with Benzema in just about every transfer window since the Frenchman broke onto the scene, so it is hard to really know how legitimate these stories are, but Corriere dello Sport tend to be more reliable than Don Balon.
The move would make a lot of sense. Benzema is 29-years-old and may be looking at one last big move.
He gets overshadowed at Real Madrid with Ronaldo and Bale (when he is fit) taking a lot of the limelight.
Arsenal are likely to be looking at replacements for Alexis Sanchez with the Chilean still linked with a move away. Benzema would certainly fit the bill for the sort of big name Arsenal would need to calm fans if they lost their biggest star.
He would also likely cost around the same or even less than the likes of Alexandre Lacazette – he is certainly a better player than his compatriot.
So while it is hard to know how legitimate the links are, there is some logic behind it. If I had to bet then of course I would say we do not see him in an Arsenal shirt, but it wouldn’t be the biggest shock to see it happen.
