Transfer blow for Arsenal as target will not be leaving club this summer
Claude Puel has said that Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk will not leave Southampton this summer.
The Saints boss, whose own job is not secure, was speaking ahead of Wednesday’s match with Arsenal.
“He has a long contract and the directors want to keep him,” Puel said.
“He has authority, the leadership of the team, he is a fantastic player.
“It’s important for us, of course, to wait until the beginning of the season to see him on the pitch with Southampton.”
Van Dijk has been linked with many of Europe’s top clubs after impressing since his move from Celtic, but Puel and Southampton want to keep hold of their centre back.
The Dutchman is seen by many as an ideal signing for Arsenal if they are to carry on playing the 3-4-3 as they have done in recent weeks, but they face competition for his signature form the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool should the 25-year-old leave the south coast club.
