ARSENAL’S TOP 25 PLAYERS UNDER ARSENE WENGER #1: Who else could it be?

So here we are, the end of this series counting down the best players to play under Arsene Wenger.

11-15 Double, double, double. Sol Campbell has won the double

6-10 Some controversial figures and a club legend

5 Another former captain as we reach the top five

4 The final defender and perhaps not everybody’s favourite ex-Arsenal player

3 One of the best midfielders of his generation

2 The club’s leading goal scorer

At one, it could only be Dennis Bergkamp for me.

The most naturally talented player I have ever seen wear an Arsenal shirt. He was magnificent. Not necessarily the most prolific scorer, but he did get 120 goals in his time here, but his vision and craft was second to none.

In those 120 he did score some phenomenal goals though. From the goals against Leicester to the turn and finish against Newcastle, the Dutchman was just a wonderful player.

Not many players at any club get a whole day to commemorate their time at the club but that happened on ‘Bergkamp Day’ during the final season at Highbury. His testimonial was also the very first game to be played at the Emirates.

Bergkamp arrived at the club with a big reputation but a career that had stalled a little at Inter. This led to great footballing minds such as Stuart Pearce to label him a waste of money. That prediction went well…

He was named PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year in 1998 and a year earlier had finished in the top three in FIFA World Player of the Year voting. Along with Thierry Henry he has an argument to be the best player never to win the award.

I sometimes feel like Bergkamp gets a little underrated in the wider football world, but all Arsenal fans appreciate what an incredible player they had.

For me, Bergkamp will always be the footballer I go back and watch over again and again. He played football in the way it should be played and I am so thankful that I got to see his best years in an Arsenal shirt.

That is why Dennis Bergkamp is my number one for players to play under Wenger and will go down as my favourite footballer of all time.
