However it came apparent at kick off that our boys wouldn’t feature much. After being sent off in the first match for Poland, Wojiech Szczeny didn’t get a starting place in their 3rd outing. Tomas Rosicky came off in Czezch Republic’s second group game with a slight knock and sat out of their match against the Poles. Andrey Arshavin was the only Arsenal man to play, in Russia’s game against Greece.

With all teams still with a chance of progressing to the next stage the games were a tense affair with all of them knowing a mistake would see them out. After the Greeks took the lead against Russia just before half time. Rosicky’s side knew they needed a win against the co hosts Poland. They managed to get the all important goal and win by the final whistle which knocked Poland out.

Despite Arshavin having had very solid performances in the tournement so far the Greeks held on through the second half to see themselves through as runners up of group A.
