Nothing is ever simple at the Emirates especially when it comes to transfers.
It has become quite clear for a number of years that Arsene Wenger pulls a majority of the strings at the club and undoubtedly all of them when it comes to the playing staff.
However, this has caused untold problems with yet another potential big-name deal starting to get into murky waters.
The transfer of Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ‘should’ have gotten over the line by now but it appears Arsene is up to his old tricks again and rather than just getting the deal done, is dragging his heels and risking a rival swopping in last minute.
The Gabonese forward has been one of Europe’s top hitmen over the last few seasons with a total of 141 goals in just 212 appearances for Die Borussen. The 28-year-old has also made it clear he wants out from Dortmund and the German giants are keen to sell.
Strangely enough it seems that Arsenal are the only genuinely interested party so why has a deal not been done yet?
The simple answer is money, but it shouldn’t be.
Arsenal have already had two bids rejected with Dortmund stating that only a fee of between 65-70 million Euros will be acceptable (about 57 – 60 million sterling).
When you consider some of the fee’s banded around by clubs for players and the fact that Liverpool payed £75 million for a defender, about £57 million for a world class centre-forward in his prime looks an absolute bargain.
However, for some reason, Mr Wenger fails to see what is blindingly obvious to all and sundry, that Aubameyang is probably under market value and needs to be gotten over the line before any other sides cotton on.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time Arsene has attempted to pull this trick, when going through the process of signing Granit Xhaka from Borussia Mönchengladbach in the summer of 2016, the German side made it clear that it was £35 million or nothing.
Despite repeated offers well under Monchengladbach’s value, Arsenal unsurprisingly ended up paying the exact amount the German side wanted but in the process, did a great job of looking like fools.
History is repeating itself again and we all know that if Arsenal really want Aubameyang, it is going to cost them close to £60 million.
So please Mr Wenger, stop wasting everyone’s time and just pay the money, we all know you can afford it and if you repeatedly keep playing these games, eventually someone is going to say no for good and them we really will be in trouble.
