Per Mertesacker announces retirement date but it is not the end of his Arsenal career
Per Mertesacker will retire at the end of the season, but he will take over as head of the club’s academy when he does hang up his boots.
It is great news for a player that seems certain to go on to be a great manager.
Even when on the sidelines through injury he has seemed like the club’s leader.
That was shown when he made his first appearance in over a year in the club’s FA Cup final win over Chelsea.
He was one of the best players on the pitch as he captained the team to a third Cup victory in four years and you would never have known he had been away.
Mertesacker takes over from Andries Jonker who left the position earlier in the season to take over the managers job at Wolfsburg.
It follows the news of Jens Lehmann’s appointment at the club earlier in the week.
