Robin Van Persie is due to complete a £24million move to Manchester United later today after his much publicised medical. The deal was announced on United’s official website:
“Manchester United is pleased to announce it has reached agreement for the transfer of Robin Van Persie,”
“The deal is subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms. A further announcement will be made in due course.”
RVP will be the first player to join move from Arsenal to Manchester since Viv Anderson, and the first in Arsene Wenger’s reign.
Speculation will now grow that Thomas Vermaelen will take on the captains armband, and you’ll all be glad to here his reaction to the news:
“I’m disappointed he’s going but life goes on.”
Arsene Wenger was quoted on TF1:
“It’s sad to lose a player of his quality. He had a year left on his contract so we didn’t have the choice”
Many reports including one from strong Arsenal news source, David Ornstein, believes that RVP did in fact agree to stay at Arsenal, or at least discuss a new deal, but he was told he would be sold.
“It is understood Van Persie was encouraged by the arrivals of Germany forward Lukas Podolski,France striker Olivier Giroudand Spain midfielder Cazorla – to the point where he was open to the idea of staying with or without a new contract.
But Wenger pulled him aside shortly before Sunday’s friendly victory over Cologne, told him he would be sold if a deal could be reached and informed the Dutchman he was no longer part of his plans.”
In Robin’s reign at Arsenal he played only 194 games, scoring 96 goals. Eclipsed by his new strike partner Rooney, who has featured 251 times scoring 129.
So the slightly sour news continues with the new Arsenal rebel Alex Song reportedly displaying disgusting behaviour, and Arsene Wenger has said he can leave.
We reported earlier in the week, Barcelona’s interest in Song, and strongly believe he could be the next out the door.
