Thomas Vermaelen looks to be in Barcelona’s sights as a back up target should they fail to secure their primary targets.
New Catalan boss Tito Vilanova is known to be hopeful of signing Athletic Bilbao defender Javi Martinez, however should they not be able to secure their number one target, the Spanish giants could come looking towards Belgian international Vermaelen as a plan B.
A move away from the Emirates, however, would be an unlikely prospect for the Arsenal vice captain having recently signed a long term contract extension and only last month told reporters:
“I love London. I’ve got a house there, I’m happy there and I don’t see any reason to ever leave the club.”
The club would also wish to keep Thomas Vermaelen due to the centre back position being a known weakness in the squad. The likely exit of players such as Sebastian Squillaci would pave the way for the Gunners to bolster its own defensive options further.
