It is with great sadness that I report Arsenal talisman Robin Van Persie has announced that he will not be extending his contract with the club.
Van Persie took to his official website to make the following statement:
“I personally have had a great season but my goal has been to win trophies with the team and to bring the club back to its glory days,”
“Out of my huge respect for Mr Wenger, the players and the fans I don’t want to go into any details, but unfortunately in the meeting it has again become clear to me that we, in many aspects, disagree on the way Arsenal FC should move forward.”
“I’ve thought long and hard about it, but I have decided not to extend my contract.”
The timing of the announcement will raise some eyebrows so soon after Arsene Wenger publicly stated that we needed to keep Van Persie ‘at all costs’. It will surely lead to more specualtion about the atmosphere and clear direction of the board and Arsene Wenger.
A question remains whether RVP will see out the last year of his contract or Arsenal will take whatever money they can for the unhappy striker. A lot of fans will not want to see a player at the club who has made it clear he wants to leave.
To add to the fans woes Theo Walcott is yet to agree a new contract and many now fear his departure after the announcement from Van Persie.
